Ask New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso what it’s like to get swept by the Chicago Cubs.

After his New York Mets were swept by the Chicago Cubs on the road this week, first baseman Pete Alonso told us how it is in rather graphic detail.

Though New York is still in a first-place tie with the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East standings, Alonso knows his team blew a big opportunity up in Chicago. By losing all three in Wrigley to the North Siders, every team in the division is now within a game of first place. New York will likely have to wait at least another year before potentially winning a game at the Friendly Confines.

Alonso’s response to getting swept by the Cubs was brutally honest, yet incredibly disgusting.

New York Mets: Pete Alonso speaks the truth after getting swept on the road

Prior to the Mets venturing up to the North Side, the Cubs had not been playing well out of the gate. This had been a frustrating year for David Ross’ team, but perhaps the Cubs can take some of this momentum into their weekend series vs. the division rival Milwaukee Brewers? The Mets will have to take that series sweep in stride, as they host the NL East rival Washington Nationals.

Overall, baseball is a marathon, not a sprint. Even though the Mets were unable to take a single game up in Chicago, none of the teams in the division are running away with it in the latter days of April. No division rival has gotten hot, so that serves a team like the Mets who might be more talented than most in the division. However, Alonso recognizes the blown opportunity wasted.

Alonso and the Mets are hoping to make a better sandwich when the Nationals come to town.
