New York Mets fans give Baltimore Orioles pitcher Matt Harvey a nice round of applause upon his return to Citi Field.
Yes, it was an early afternoon game on a Wednesday between two teams that didn’t make the postseason a year ago, but you have to applaud the less-than-capacity crowd’s effort to put their hands together for The Dark Knight. A long time ago, Harvey was the hero Gotham wanted, but definitely not the one Mets fans deserved. You can say Harvey left a dent in the heart of New York.
At least Harvey gets to keep living out his big league dream now on his fifth MLB franchise.
Baltimore Orioles: Matt Harvey gets an ovation from New York Mets fans
Harvey pitched with the Mets from 2013 to 2018. He was an All-Star in 2013 and was named Comeback Player of the Year in 2015 after having undergone Tommy John surgery the year prior. A myriad of injuries derailed Harvey’s Mets tenure after the 2015 campaign. He was designated for assignment by the Mets in 2018 before signing with the Cincinnati Reds later that season.
Since being released by the Mets three years ago, Harvey has pitched for the 2018 Reds, the 2019 Los Angeles Angels, the 2020 Kansas City Royals and now the 2021 Orioles. All the while, he has not been part of anything close to winning teams. While he has found his footing in his early 30s, we will always wonder what could have been for Harvey had he not gotten hurt in the mid-2010s.
There was a brief moment there in 2013 when Harvey was the hottest pitcher in all of baseball.
