The Mets have been the topic of conversation on New York sports radio on Monday in regards to their “thumbs down” celebration controversy, which was revealed by second baseman Javier Baez as a response to booing fans at Citi Field. Given that it was a top trending topic, the Mets team gained significant time on the airwaves on the start of the work week.

A Twitter user tagged Mets pitcher Marcus Stroman, asking him to call into ESPN radio program, “The Michael Kay Show, hosted by the play-by-play television announcer of the New York Yankees. The user said that the hosts of the show were “ripping” him. That is when Stroman responded with this tweet.

The quote used in Stroman’s tweet is from a June 2020 article by NJ Advance Media, which detailed an interaction between Kay and a person claiming to be a police officer calling into his show. Kay and his co-host Don LaGreca were discussing Madison Square Garden Company sending out an internal statement to players and employees of the New York Knicks and Rangers that they would not be making a public statement regarding the killing of George Floyd. That is when the caller said those exact words about the lack of minority co-hosts on Kay’s radio show, to which Kay responded that he did not have authority over who gets hired to his show.

Through 27 starts with the Mets this season, Stroman recorded a 2.85 ERA, a 1.12 WHIP, 134 strikeouts and 36 walks in 151.1 innings.
