Oakland Athletics reliever Chris Bassitt returned to the mound on Thursday after suffering his terrifying injury against the White Sox.
Thursday’s contest between the Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics had to be emotional for pitcher Chris Bassitt. Less than a month after having surgery for facial fractures, which he suffered against the White Sox, Bassitt took the mound in the series finale against the M’s.
Although Oakland lost, Bassitt tossed three scoreless innings. He worked his tail off to get back on the bump both physically and mentally. The hurler made that much clear in an emotional Twitter post where he shared gruesome photos from his injury.
Chris Bassitt’s latest tweet will have Oakland Athletics fans ready to run through a wall
That is simply an amazing message from Bassitt. No one will ever question just how much the man loves Oakland and this team. Hearts dropped everywhere when Bassitt took that liner off his face. He fell to the ground in an incredible amount of pain.
Things were so bad, he indeed needed to have surgery. Once surgery was wrapped up, though, he began his rehab work to get himself back on the field. For him to bounce back and look outstanding on Thursday really was great to see.
While it was disappointing that the A’s were swept by the Mariners in the four-game series, you can’t take anything away from Bassitt. Missing so much time had to hurt, especially with his team in the middle of a chase for an AL Wild Card spot.
Oakland’s chances of making the playoffs took a massive hit with this latest series against Seattle, but they’ll be ready to fight to the end. Everyone now knows more than ever that Bassitt will give it his all as well.
