The Seattle Mariners became huge fans of the Baltimore Orioles, who helped them rise up the AL Wild Card standings.
The AL Wild Card race has lived up to the expectations of being unpredictable and straight-up chaotic. The Seattle Mariners have been one of the late risers in the postseason berth sweepstakes, but they needed some help from the Baltimore Orioles, who faced off against the Boston Red Sox.
On Thursday night, the Mariners had an off day, sitting a half a game behind the Red Sox for the second Wild Card berth. But thanks to a 6-2 win by Baltimore over Boston, the Mariners now sit tied for the last Wild Card spot.
After the game, the Mariners essentially gave the Orioles a thank you. Baltimore’s social media team responded in kind by embracing the newfound fandom of not just the Mariners, but the New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays as well. Or, as caption dubbed them, the “Diehard Baltimore Orioles Fan Club.”
Mariners now tied for second Wild Card berth thanks to the Orioles
Seattle’s great week only got better, thanks to the Orioles.
Earlier this week, Seattle looked to fend off the rival Oakland Athletics, and they did just that. After sweeping the three-game series, the Athletics were officially eliminated from postseason contention.
On Tuesday night, the Mariners’ social media team posted a meme asking the Orioles if they wanted to form an alliance. Baltimore happily obliged, as they took two-of-three games from Boston.
The Mariners now have three games remaining in the season, where they will host the Los Angeles Angels. If Seattle can stay afloat and be one of the final teams left standing in the AL, they will make the postseason for the first time since 2001.
Baltimore look to continue their role as “Team Chaos” as they take on the Blue Jays in a three-game set in Toronto starting Friday.
