Washington Nationals shortstop Jordy Mercer was furious on a questionable called strike three, and Phil Cuzzi threw him out.

Cuzzi was only going to take so much backtalk from a player of Mercer’s caliber, especially after he made the right call.

Red Sox reliever Ryan Brasier got a huge strikeout to end a seventh-inning threat. The Nationals had the bases loaded with Mercer at the plate. Rather than come through in the clutch and hurt Boston’s postseason chances in the process, Mercer went down like the .exceptionally average hitter he is.

Christian Vazquez’s framing technique should be questioned, as catching that ball underhand made it appear lower than it actually was. Mercer was fooled.

Red Sox: Ryan Brasier gets huge strikeout of Jordy Mercer

Brasier’s strikeout is a moment that could be remembered from this Sox season should they make a run of some sort. Mercer isn’t great, but he’s still an MLB-caliber hitter and a veteran.

Give Cuzzi some credit for not ejecting Mercer on the spot. He let him get a word in, but eventually there’s only so much disagreement an umpire can take.

For once, consider me on the side of the ump. Good job, blue.
