The Cubs can look into Trevor Story with Cardinals uninterested.
The Chicago Cubs have another candidate for the shortstop job in Trevor Story after it was reported the Cardinals may be content with what they have. If St. Louis sees their future at shortstop in house with Paul DeJong and young budding star Edmundo Sosa, that opens the door for the Cubs to take a look at Story as an option for their vacancy. Russell Dorsey seems to co-sign the idea.
The Cubs seem to be one of the favorites in the race to sign another free agent shortstop, Carlos Correa. But should things fall through, Story would be a great addition to the Cubs lineup. Plus, with his asking price potentially a little lower than that of Correa, the Cubs could potentially sign Story along with another big name free agent – say, Kris Bryant?
Cubs: Trevor Story a great option if Cardinals disinterested
After the Cubs signed starting pitcher Marcus Stroman before the MLB lockout began, the need for a middle infielder became that much more important. The rotation with Stroman and Kyle Hendricks is predominantly ground ball oriented. An elite middle infield is key for the success of the starters. Signing Story would make him the starter at shortstop, making a battle for second base between Nico Hoerner and Nick Madrigal. Questions remain at the corner infield positions, but the Cubs also made a splash by signing young outfielder Clint Frazier to a one-year “prove it” deal.
Adding Story or Correa to the lineup would bring new life to Cubs fans and a roster that was stripped down at the trade deadline for this very reason.
