The Yankees are striking out on free agent shortstops, so why not head to the trade market and a division rival for help?

The Yankees have a glaring need to address at the shortstop position.

Prior to the lockout, New York was linked to big name shortstops such as Corey Seager (now with the Texas Rangers), Trevor Story and Carlos Correa. And it’s still possible the Yankees manage to ink Story or Correa once the lockout ceases.

But for now, let’s get crazy, shall we?

Former MLB player and current analyst Xavier Scruggs proposed a wild trade between the Yankees and rival Toronto Blue Jays involving star shortstop… Bo Bichette?

MLB analyst proposes a Yankees-Blue Jays trade involving Bo Bichette

It would be total lunacy for the Blue Jays to trade away one of their brightest young players in Bichette, who is part of the team’s young core which also has Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Teoscar Hernandez. But to the Yankees, of all teams? Forget about it.

Bichette has had a stellar career so far, with a career .828 OPS and 123 OPS+ at the ripe age of 23 years old. That kind of player only gets dealt for a ransom. Any trade for Bichette would have to start with a top prospect like the Yankees’ Anthony Volpe, Oswald Peraza and/or Jasson Dominguez.

Speaking of Volpe and Peraza, the Yankees already have two top shortstop prospects in house. And while both may be at least a year away, the payoff by not blocking them at the big league level could be massive for New York down the line.

For what it’s worth, Scruggs also mentioned Bobby Witt Jr. as a potential solution for the Yankees’ shortstop problem. That’s also ridiculous, because he’s the Kansas City Royals’ No. 1 prospect at the moment.

Witt Jr. has yet to see big league action, and while he may be closer than Volpe and Peraza are at this point, the idea that the Royals would trade one of their top young players also seems nothing short of ludicrous.
