Minor League Baseball got heated last night in a Binghamton Rumble Ponies vs Portland Sea Dogs game at Hadlock Field.
The Binghamton Rumble Ponies faced the Portland Sea Dogs last night at Hadlock Field in Portland, Maine for an eventful and chaotic game of Minor League Baseball. The game quickly escalated in an unexpected turn of events when the two teams ended up in an all-out brawl on the field after an inaccurate pitch struck the Sea Dogs batter’s hand.
Binghamton pitcher Marcel Renteria threw an inside-ball that struck Portland first baseman Tyreque Reed in the hand. Reed began to walk to first base, and Renteria stepped away from the mound. The two exchanged words before Reed charged to the mound and threw punches that knocked Renteria to the ground. The dugouts of each team sprinted to the aid of their teammates to break up the fight.
What caused the fight between Marcel Renteria and Tyreque Reed?
Renteria’s initial frustration was allegedly caused by home plate umpire Tyler Witte. According to a Tweet posted by Jacob Resnick, Renteria claimed the ball hit Reed’s bat rather than his hand.
“Looked like Renteria was claiming the HBP actually hit Tyreque Reed’s bat. Reed took it as directed towards him, I guess. There hasn’t been previous bad blood this series.” -Jacob Resnick, via Twitter
Neither player handled the situation well which resulted in Witte ejecting both from the game. The two created havoc between the teams and what was supposed to be a fun family-friendly game turned into an all-out brawl.
